foolsnobody Special user Buffalo, NY 825 Posts | 0 I agree with Mr. Duffies' small pamphlet choices. Effects like Impromptu OOTW, Magician vs. Gambler, Red and Black Fantasy. In Deck-sterity, surely the seminal routining of Ten Card Poker Deal, and again some of the Faro work and non-card items. But, effects like Foursome and The Indicator which Harry at the time felt were the best most requested effects in the book, how do they hold up and how do they play for laymen today? Turning to Rim Shots, what's in there that you use? Yes, a lot of good utility moves..but routines? Do you use that Viet Nam trick? Any Halo Cut effects, Half-force effects? Do you use these routines for laymen today? By what criteria do Mssrs. Duffie and Chosse put these books at the top of Lorayne's oeuvre (as Racherbaumer would call it)..I want to experience their thought processes because of their reputations, NOT at all to be critical AT ALL. What do they SEE in these books that I am missing? The top cardmen posting on this thread find the same two HL books the best. That is a waker-upper folks! That gets my attention! I am compelled to dig deeper..
Ben Bishop New user Ontario, Canada 28 Posts | 0 I love BEST OF FRIENDS, VOL. 1. So much material, and so easy to read. After that, CLOSE-UP CARD MAGIC then PERSONAL SECRETS. I must say, though, that as I get older, I have less patience with his relentless self-references.
corpmagi Special user New York 696 Posts | 0 Close-up Card Magic followed closely by Decksterity and Reputation Makers. I still use many of the routines in these books today. Quantum Leaps, Rim Shots and Afterthoughts just didn't do it for me. A Modern Trade Show Handbook www.trafficstoppers.com/handbook
Canvey Card Sharp Special user Canvey Island Essex ENGLAND 552 Posts | 0 That's all part of Harry Lorayne tho isn't it. I love all of his work but have to chuckle when anything that remotely over the years has mirrored something of his was 'THEFT' yet anything HE produced in a similar vein is always 'Two great minds thinking alike'. That said, the man is GOD !

How does it stack up to his other work? Patrick Differ Inner circle 1540 Posts | 0 Whoops! Forgot about Tarbell 7!!! Really neat stuff in there and organized well by Mr. Lorayne. I believe he sorted through all of it to write the index. That must have been a MONSTER job. I'll have to find Rim Shots.. Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly, Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again.

Canvey Card Sharp Special user Canvey Island Essex ENGLAND 552 Posts | 0 Apart form M-E-S, I think Personal Collection was a bit of a letdown; particularly at the price I paid for it in England! Let's be honest, how many methods do we need of revealing a spectators card - to them, method is invisble (or hopefully should be)!! Overall I much prefer Harry's earlier stuff - I feel that it generally lost some of its appeal after Quantum Leaps (1979 & my fave book). I also think that his worst book was 'Afterthoughts' (1975?) - by a mile. Well that's the negative slant but even these books were of some value and I still think the man has given more to card magic through the power of the written word than anyone else in history.
gerard1973 Special user Michigan, U.S.A. 688 Posts | 0 RonCalhou: My favorite Harry Lorayne books are: 1. The Magic Book 2. Close-Up Card Magic Harry Lorayne’s Magic Book is about general magic while Harry’s Close-Up Card Magic is about Card Magic. I would recommend that you read the Magic Book first because it teaches you the basic Card Magic sleights needed for the Close-Up Card Magic book. Gerard

snushy Veteran user 313 Posts | 0 Harry's latest..Classic Collection. He basically re-wrote his first 4 books (Close Up Card Magic, Personal Secrets, My Favorite Card Tricks, and Decksterity), threw in a re-write of Epitome Location, and even added some never-before-published stuff originally intended for Personal Collection. This is a great book even if you have all the original editions because you get the benefit of Harry's insights looking back at this material spanning 40+ years. He's made subtle changes to some of the handling in certain situations, and it's fascinating to read why and how his thinking has changed over the years. A must have. L.
